Top Export Quality Onion Varieties in India and Its Producing States

Onions are the backbone of Indian cuisine having a distinctive flavor and pungency that enhance the taste of any food. After China, India is the second-largest producer of onions in the world, contributing to about 22.83% of the overall onion production in the world. That's why there is a huge export demand for this crop that is available round the year.


In FY21, India exported around USD 378 million worth of onions to countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Qatar, etc. which is 15% higher than FY20.


The major varieties of commercially grown onion crops are classified below:


Agrifound Dark Red


The crop is dark red in color, tight in the skin, globular in shape, and moderately pungent. They are recommended for growing in the Kharif season all over the country and get mature in approx. 95-110 days after sowing.


Agrifound Light Red


Bulbs of this crop are appealing dark, tight in the skin, large in size, globular in shape, reddish thick inner scales, and light red color. They are recommended for growing in Rabi season all over the country and get full grown in approx. 110-120 days after transplanting.


Agrifound Rose


Bulbs of this crop are deep scarlet red in color, 2.5-3.5 cm in size, and flattish round in shape. They mature in 95-110 days subsequent to planting. Agrifound rose onions are recommended for growing in the Kharif season in Andhra Pradesh and in all three seasons in Karnataka.


Agrifound Red


The bulbs of this multiplier onions are light red and 3.64 cm in size. A number of bulbs (5-6) are clustered together which makes the average weight of the cluster around 65-67 g while the weight of a single bulb is 8.85 g. This crop gets full grown in approx. 65-67 days after planting and is recommended for cultivation in Kharif and Rabi in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.


Pusa Red


Bulbs of this crop are red in color, flattish round in shape, medium in size, and weigh 70-90 g. This crop matures in approx. 123-140 days after transplanting.


Pusa Ratna


The crop is slightly oblate with attractive deep red and large in size. It is an early maturing variety that is exposed above ground at maturity.


Arka Kalyan


Bulbs of this crop are deep pink in color and each bulb weighs about 100-190 g. These onions are recommended for growing in the Kharif season and get full grown in approx. 140 days after planting.


Arka Niketan


This crop is yellow in color and globular shape. It is a Kharif season crop that gets mature in about 45 days.


The Top States in India Producing Onions


Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh are the top states that produce onions at a large-scale accounting for almost 90% of the total onion production in India. The crop is available all through the year because of three onion growing seasons i.e.; Kharif (July-August), late Kharif (October-November), and rabi (December-January).
